LOST PADRES
ECHO MAGIC (2025)
The Lost Padre emerged as a searcher, a man questioning his choices of love and life, and looking for a way to square his past with his future days. As the ubiquitous drag of time erodes him, he becomes one of los perdidos— the lost ones. And that’s where we pick him up on the first track “When Things Fall Apart”— a man who lost faith in his luck. Languid lap steel and synths lay beneath ropy guitars, as our narrator contends with the wolves at his door. Only, in an ironic twist of fate, they’re begging him for grace. As the refrain swells with its bittersweet melody, we learn that love may inevitably break your heart, but it can also save you- if you can find it in its true form.
The recordings were made with an all-star crew in Sausalito’s famed Record Plant, (now 2200 Studios) where Sly Stone labored over his masterpiece, Fresh, The Grateful Dead harnessed the strange aura of Wake of the Flood, and Fleetwood Mac conjured Rumours. Additional recording was done at Spacecamp in Sebastopol, and Echo Magic studios in Ojai.
Personnel includes Skyway Man James Wallace’s arpeggiated synths that dance like a silvery wave over “Future King” and “Hey Perdido.” Drummer Michael Urbano’s idiosyncratic beats are the perfect foil to work against the boxy drum box rhythms all over the record. Matthew Douglas’s balmy saxophone heats up “When You Were Old” and “Twin Flame.” The magic trio of harmony singers used on Windless Day come back here in full force on many songs, led by the renowned ex-wife of Bob Dylan, Carolyne Dennis, and also features mother and daughter Jade and Sharon Hendrix. Maestro Damien Lewis makes an appearance on the drum-kit, and the record was co-produced and largely co-written under the steady oversight of Daniel Wright. Even Widespread Panic’s legend Dave Schools commands the bass on a tune.
